1 NFL combine is useless

By Kenny Howell

It's another NFL combine which means another useless exercise in hyping or devaluing players for stupid reasons, none of which actually pertain to playing football.

The first, which Deadspin reported, is of Stanford TE Zach Ertz, whose arms are an inch and a half too short, so that hurts his draft stock. He is at the top of a lot of people's boards for tight ends.

It's the same tune every year. All these years of tape of actual football goes out the door cause there is one physical flaw. It's that dumb thinking that leads to busts in drafts, and a bunch of wasted money.

I have said it before, but I think there is a small handful of really intelligent people in the NFL, and the rest are just regurgitating what they have learned from previous guys. What that leads to is people using the same flawed thinking they have always used, and picking guys like Darius Heyward-Bay because they can run fast. He doesn't do all the other things a receiver needs to do, but he runs fast. Everyone in the NFL runs fast. That's not what makes them good football players.

So just ignore all this nonsense. There are way better ways to evaluate a player than watching them exercise. Like, I don't know, actually watch them play football.
